His teaching experience ranges from Primary to Higher Education, and incorporates eight years as a teacher and housemaster in independent secondary schools. Martin’s work during this time included careers guidance, Head of Special Educational Needs, and counselling (in which he is qualified). Martin has also worked for a further seven years with young people with social emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) both in mainstream schools and in a special residential school for pupils with SEBD, where he was a senior teacher.
Currently, Martin Barker is teaching undergraduates and postgraduates at university. He has substantial experience as an award-winning teacher, researcher and advisor in universities in the UK and USA, and has published several books and numerous academic papers.
Martin describes himself as a ‘problem solver’ and ‘visualiser’, and is pleased to offer his skills and experience to the Bachlaw Advisory Board. He has a strong belief in the capacity of struggling young people to turn their lives around, and in the staff who can help them to achieve this. “We all have hidden strengths!”
